We hear a lot about the dumbing-down of America; however, what we're seeing now is the mental breakdown of our society, the loosening of our moral and intellectual moorings from reality, the overturning of the normal and the embrace of dangerous and irresponsible fantasies. Dostoevsky's observation - "With God, all things are possible; without God, all things are permissible" - is more germane than ever.

Yep, banning tobacco and banning 'harmful words' are all of a piece - 'For our own good'. So Prohibition would be the template too. And it isn't just the state or the establishment but once the 'moral' course is set, a section of the public becomes hysterical about imposing the new 'morals' and attacking businesses which don't conform:

That previous moral panic only went away because of 2 world wars, and then only to resurface again later with new moral crusades.
