See no weevil

What a spectacular piece of good fortune! I was recently rooting around the sweet potatoes at the supermarket and found this card (an official SWEET POTATO CERTIFICATE) lying on the bottom of the bin (click to enlarge).

The final two lines read: "Grown, stored, packed and shipped from a nonregulated area in which the sweet potato weevil is not known to occur". And the card bears the signature of the Commissioner of Agriculture for North Carolina, Steven W. Troxler.

So, the Pacos can dine on sweet potatoes without having to worry about the presence of weevils.

Sorry, folks, but that's about as close as I ever get to winning the lottery.

  1. You know what this means, don't you? It means that the Pacos will be the warlords of NC, come the grim dark post apocalyptic future that is our inevitable fate.

Learn to weld if you don't already know... better yet, recruit some welders into the clan and start armoring up vehicles.

I intend to be warlord of my corner of the PNW in the End Times. We should start working out trade arrangements and mutual support.

  2. Logistics could be difficult a that distance, but I suppose we could put together convoys based on the vehicles from Road Warrior.

  5. Paco, did you ever go to the Udvar-Hazy Center near Dulles? It's the Smithsonian's "overflow" display for the National Air and Space Museum. Among many other aircraft they have a couple gyrocopters, including a two seater.

I remember in the late Sixties and Seventies, Benson advertised in magazines such as Popular Mechanics. You'd buy a kit and build it in your garage or wherever.

  6. No, I regret that I did not. Which is strange, because everywhere else we lived that was near an air museum - Miami, Richmond, Phoenix - we always made a point of visiting. My older son even did volunteer work at the air museum in Richmond, VA (now, sadly, closed).

  7. What are like prices in your area? Gas? One ear of corn is $.73 at Walmart. $.73!! Bell peppers are $.63. Sliced bread shelves remain empty. Luckily, rolls and croissants are back. (There's a garlic herb croissant that I've fallen in love with. Sadly, they didn't come in the last shipment.) I noticed that all the specialty breads were packaged in Spanish labels. Hmmm.

Gas (Murphy's at Walmart) is jumping $.07 a gallon once or twice a week. Thankfully we aren't as bad as California, but this is still bad.
