I had never seen or even heard of a fractal vise before seeing this fellow restoring one on a YouTube video. The intricacy of the parts and the ingenious design fascinate me.

"There are countless horrible things happening all over the world and horrible people prospering, but we must never allow them to disturb our equanimity or deflect us from our sacred duty to sabotage and annoy them whenever possible." -Auberon Waugh
Sweet! I've never seen a vise like that before. The restoration work was a combination of old and new technologies.
ReplyDeleteI thought I would watch a bit then fast forward through. Nope, watched every bit. It was fascinating; I learnt about Japaning and flatenning. Loved the no gloves and the work hardened hands and fingernails. The craftsman was a crackup as well.
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting Paco
Glad you liked it, Mick! I actually went online trying to find one of these things, but with no success.
ReplyDeleteThe level of craftsmanship in that vise is astonishing, Paco, especially when you consider it was made in 1913, by hand. Look at how he made that one replacement part ... ... by computer control and hand finishing. Back when, Someone had to mill it, by hand, to that smooth fit.
ReplyDeleteIt is amazing. So much craftmanship has been lost forever.
