Ghastly

"Australian Local Govt Shoots Dogs at Pound to Stop Rescuers Collecting Them During Covid".

They're probably going to wind up shooting people before this is over - and not just in Australia.

Meanwhile, here's Gregory with a good roundup of info on the protests down under.

  1. Who would order such a thing? Who would carry it out?

While it would be tempting to condemn the Aussies here, imagine for a moment how many in America would be on board with this. You know people who would do it.

  3. I can imagine heads exploding for the die hard PETA types.

Like the cartoon meme showing the hero sweating profusely as he tries to decide which button to push: 'All animal lives are sacred' or 'Dogs must die to stop Covid.'

But, having said that, I can also see the really rabid PETA freaks siding with the dogs. "A few more humans die, so what."

  4. Cobar is way out on the edge of the desert, a mining town.

They would already have professional kangaroo shooters because they can be a menace out there, so it's how they get rid of excess animals in the 'outback'. In the city (R)SPCA pounds they 'euthanise' them with injections, having better access to resources.

Our lawyer is an 'Animal Justice Party' candidate like the ones complaining in the article. City folks making rules for country folks.

For the rank and file, certainly. But PETA animal shelters have an appalling death rate, so the leadership is probably studying the Australian approach with some interest.

  7. PS, there would be large aboriginal settlements in all these towns on the edge of the desert (both Bourke and Cobar), whose ancestors were decimated by smallpox, having had no previous contact with the outside world.

While I think the virus risk to us in the cities is very much exaggerated and a big overreaction, these remote aboriginal people are a totally different story. Still isolated much like their ancestors but less healthy due to diet and diabetes, who knows how bad it would hit them? And in recent weeks some cases have begun to spread around that general area (contra the claim in the article).

They say more than half of aboriginal people were wiped out by smallpox 2 centuries ago. If killing a few dogs avoids that possibility, I can see why they did it.
