Tragic accident

Actor, liberal Democrat and perpetually angry man, Alec Baldwin, has finally managed to kill someone: "Alec Baldwin fires prop gun in 'misfire' that kills cinematographer, injures director".

God rest the soul of Halyna Hutchins, the cinematographer who died, and speed the injured director Joel Souza to full recovery.

Vale to Halyna (who apparently grew up in the former Soviet Union and made her way to America), and my best wishes to Mr. Souza.

I really dislike dunking on anyone following a tragedy like what just happened, but ... ... while many actors and actresses are hypocrites when it comes to gun control, Alec Baldwin is in a class all by himself.

And he just found out, up close and personal, just what it means to kill another person. Without the added stress of deciding if your life is in danger or not. After slamming police officers for shootings in the line of duty as "wrongful", regardless of the circumstances.

As a small arms trainer, I'd like to know the details of exactly what happened. As an example of what not to do.

But not all Hollywood occupants are ignorant of gun safety. Will Smith is deep within the bowels of that wretched community, but he does understand muzzle control.

If we were to give Baldwin the same courtesy and benefit of the doubt he always extends to us, the scaffolding would have already been built and he'd be choosing his last meal.

no death penalty in New Mexico, it is still a fourth-degree felony punishable by up to 18 months in prison and up to $5,000 in fines, but he probably won't be charged and the props guy will be fired.

Maybe we can make an argument for using the sentencing guidelines from the era in which the movie is set - 19th century New Mexico.

Works for me.

As a resident of New Mexico, I think it's a pretty safe bet that Baldwin will not be prosecuted. The movie industry brings an awful lot of cash into the state, both in taxes and services, and the governor is not likely to put the brakes on that gravy train.

I recollect that the TV series Longmire was filmed in New Mexico. I loved the view from his front porch!

I just Googled it; Longmire's cabin is located at Valles Caldera National Preserve on New Mexico Highway 4, 16 miles west of Los Alamos. Absolutely beautiful scenery.

Why was a movie prop gun even capable of firing live ammo?

Why was live ammo even on the movie set?

There will be lawsuits which will probably kill the movie. I don't think Baldwin will be charged because he didn't load the gun, and he could not have known what measures were taken to clear the barrel (although he should have when it was handed to him). I don't think it was live ammunition; it seems pretty obvious the prop master didn't inspect the gun to make sure there was nothing in the barrel that shouldn't have been there. So it's the prop master who will be liable.

All that said, I would welcome the death of Baldwin's career, since he's a pig of a human being. It's a tragedy for Ms. Hutchins' family and Mr. Souza.
