Wow, that mechanical hammer (which reminds me of a brace bit) was in BAD shape. Nice restoration work.

I'm curious how it works and what it does. Almost curious enough to look for a youtube vid.

I have a hand crank drill. I haven't used it in decades but I figure it'll come in handy when the power goes out.

I took a quick look at Wikipedia, and it seems like these things are mainly for drilling holes in very hard materials, in order to create, for example, "holes in concrete footings to pin concrete wall forms and to drill holes in concrete floors to pin wall framing".
