On a recent trip to Virginia Beach to visit #1 son and grandkids, I noticed that one of the neighbors still had a Halloween yard decoration up. I can understand. It's a lot easier to just leave the thing there.
Mrs. Paco's eldest sister sent her this pretty shot of a statue of Mary and the infant Jesus, located in Santiago, Chile (La Virgen del Cerro 18 - literally, the Virgin of Hill # 18; the significance of the number is that it stands for September 18, 1810, the date on which a junta was proclaimed that declared Chile to be an autonomous republic within the Spanish monarchy - an early step toward complete independence from Spain).
The other day, friend and commenter Tom mentioned a video I put up a while back concerning the Jetson One, a single-person drone-type flying machine. His comment reminded me of another video I had seen recently, about a powered parachute craft that experienced engine failure at what looks to be close to a thousand feet. Probably not as dangerous as it first appeared to me - since the thing is, after all, a type of parachute - it's still a bit of a nail-biter.
My wife's birthplace Trinidad have a Christmas tradition of bands of singers going house to house singing Aguinaldo 'Parang':

The rhythm is very infectious and the Spanish lyrics are supposed to be about the Nativity, but there are secular Parang too. Some singers improvise lyrics which I think is an old Spanish tradition. Here's one of those, I have no idea what he's singing about:

Pretty catchy stuff!
ReplyDeleteThere are still Halloween decorations up around here, too. I guess it's the November version of still having Christmas lights up in February.
ReplyDeleteLovely photo of the virgin.
I question the sanity of people who go up in flimsy flying craft, but then I don't have that requisite sense of immortality. Glad it didn't turn out worse, but I imagine the Mrs. dropped their underwear in the washing machine as soon as they got home.
Personally, I don't like to go to any height where a tumble has more than a 10% chance of killing me.
ReplyDeleteThe Halloween decorations are just Rednecks branching out. Of course the bright color of the Christmas lights do give a different feel to the skeletons, witches, bats, tombstones, and the like.
ReplyDeleteThe picture of the statue of Mary and the moon is phenomenal. It seems to be during the recent lunar eclipse, which makes it even more amazing. Something was mentioned about this eclipse and 580 years, although I don't remember the specifics.
My Dad and I considered buying a ultra-light aircraft. We never did. I fantasized about flying home on weekends to the ranch (central Arizona) from Ft. Huachuca (southern Arizona) where I was stationed.
