We can still celebrate our America.
Here's a fascinating video, featuring Paul Harvey talking about the very real sacrifices made by many of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. When these men pledged "our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor", they were dead serious (video found in the sidebar at Ace of Spades).
Joseph Warren, a member of the Sons of Liberty, wrote patriotic lyrics and set them to the tune, "The British Grenadiers", creating a song called "Free America".
And a happy Independence Day to you, your family and the Paco contributors everywhere. The closest equivalent we have to that day is Australia Day. It is usually celebrated with lots of alcohol, burnt meat and a good punch-up to finish things off. Have a good one.

ReplyDeleteThanks, guys. We’ve been having some rain off and on; hope the fireworks celebration doesn’t get washed out. Our town of Southport bills itself as the fireworks capital of North Carolina.
ReplyDeleteHappy Independence Day, everyone! The Paul Harvey tribute was fitting and magnificent.
ReplyDeleteWe spent yesterday with the kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids watching them play on the giant inflatable waterslide, and having a water balloon war. Apparently you can buy water balloons by the gross at Walmart, and they come with an intake that can fill them up a dozen at a time. Fireworks at the school ball fields afterwards. Ain't America great?
Today is the day to sit and reflect in air conditioning.
Water balloons! Boy, that brings back memories. Continue having a splendid day! - Paco
DeleteHappy Independence Day to all! We celebrate by watching the wonderful film 1776. It's interesting that DirectTV is only showing The Patriot on a Spanish language channel. The Paul Harvey piece is splendid. I didn't know those facts. It will now join our Independence Day celebrations.
ReplyDeleteNo fireworks here due to the extreme drought. The restrictions won't stop the neighbors, I'm betting. My main concern isn't them, because this isn't the first drought. My concern is how it may effect the two dogs who were dumped at our place a few days ago.
Huzzah!
