A new video clip that's been released seems to underscore the almost blithe incompetence of the officers: "Uvalde Cop Casually Stops For Some Hand Sanitizer as Children Are Being Murdered".
How did this police department come to be in such a state?

I think r-man is spot on. Sadly.
ReplyDeleteYes, the performance of the Uvalde police is one aspect of the decline in our civilization and culture, but I'd be interested in seeing the results of a full, honest investigation into this particular department (if that ever happens), because rarely, if ever, have I seen an entire police force demonstrate such abject timidity and, in my view, criminal incompetence. The situation is not really comparable to what we saw in connection with the protests and riots in places like Minneapolis and Portland by BLM and Antifa. In those cases, it was clearly the overarching leftwing politics of city government that led to the police being reined in - primarily because the rioters were the leftist politicians' real constituents. But in Uvalde, we're talking about one homicidal loner - without defenders, as far as I know - who was murdering children. Did the police chief instill in his officers the dangerous attitude that I have noticed floating around among certain police brass and cops, that the main goal is to get home alive and unharmed every night? That is certainly a goal, one that is shared by each cop and his family and all decent, law-abiding citizens; there are few things sadder than to read of a police officer killed in the line of duty. But it is not the primary goal. The primary goal is to do your duty, to serve and protect, to interpose yourself between the good guys and the bad guys, sometimes in very risky situations which can occasionally result in being injured or even killed. It's a dangerous profession, and nobody is forced to enter it, but focusing on getting home safely at night, even if it means shirking your duty and letting innocent people die, completely undermines the effectiveness, and even the rationale, of a police force. The vast majority of cops know and accept this. So, what happened in Uvalde? Bad policing philosophy and procedures from on high, or something else?
ReplyDeleteIf I recall correctly, at the time, there were one or more civilians (parents maybe) that were ready to enter the building and try to stop the killing themselves. But, the authorities on scene stopped them.
ReplyDeleteIt's not a question of police attitude toward dangerous situations, it's a question of doing what needs to be done in the moment to protect innocent children. That should be a natural instinct for any law enforcement officer. If not, they should be behind a desk.
I think this was very much a case of this department's attitude toward dangerous situations, otherwise the uniforms in charge would have given the order to go in. I suppose it's also possible that the individual cops were completely lacking in the instinct to protect, or were more afraid of disobeying their superiors than giving way to what, I agree, should have been their natural instincts. That's why I'd like to see a real investigation, because whether the department's management was incompetent, or the individual cops were just too damned scared to do the job they should have done (either out of fear for their personal safety, or fear of violating orders) or a combination of both, or maybe some other factors, Uvalde needs to figure this thing out - and not just for the sake of this one town.
ReplyDeleteI have never been shot at but like every man and woman I have spoken to about this shooting, I would like to think I would have gone in with whatever was at hand to kill this prick.
ReplyDeleteHope I never have to find out.
But where in this footage is the locked steel door? It seems the only thing stopping those cops from unloading their handguns in his direction is the perfectly understandable fear of stopping a 5.56 slug.
It's a horrific situation to be quoting comedic lines but Monty Python's brave Sir Robin keeps popping into my head. "When danger reared its ugly head he bravely turned his tail and fled".
