And now, a word from our sponsor

  1. I can remember taking Alka-Seltzer when I was young, but I don't remember why I did. Or if it did anything other than tickle my nose.

Which may have been the reason I took it.

    1. My Granny liked the stuff. I detested it, and still don't go near it.

  2. I hate to argue with Buster Keaton, but Brioschi is superior, it tastes a lot better and you don't have to stare at the cup to see when the tablet was gone but the solution was still fizzy.

I did not like taking alka seltzer, I was happy when I learned that baking soda made you burp much more easily.

  3. I've always enjoyed Buster. I like mascot Speedy Alka-Seltzer, but can't stand the product.

  4. I took it occasionally when I was a kid, but I don't remember why, either. Upset stomach, maybe? And, yeah, I hated it, too. Notice, in the commercials, you don't actually see Buster Keaton swallowing the stuff.

  5. Well, he might've taken a sip. If he did, I bet he spit it out off-camera.

  6. I'm another one who got fed Alka-Seltzer, and yes, I don't remember why either. Stomach ache maybe, from eating my grandmother's persimmons off her tree? I kind of liked it, though, because of the fizz and the slightly salty taste.

  7. I don't remember if I ever took the stuff -- probably not, my parents didn't buy a lot of over-the-counter medications.

The last big production I remember Buster Keaton in was "A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum" -- Zero Mostel was the star, but Buster play the straight man.

  8. Jeff, I saw a bit on him. When talkies came around he signed a contract that took all creative control away from him, he got boned as they wouldn't let him be funny .
That ticked me off, he was a genius.

  9. I've seen at least one talkie (a short, if I recall) that was hilarious. Ah, here's a clip from the video.

But, yeah, his best work was in the silent films. I put up a video awhile back that was a compilation, I believe, of some of his chase scenes. Absolutely brilliant.
