Wildlife encounter

Mrs. Paco and I were driving home from church in the early evening, and on one of the stretches of Hwy 211 bordered by fields and woods, a bobcat decided to run across the road in front of us. I automatically tapped the brake pedal, but he was fast and safe on the opposite side before I had to really slam on the brakes and so I avoided slewing the car around and into the weeds (or into the path of oncoming traffic).

I wish we had some bobcats in our neighborhood, to reduce the rabbit population. I've seen a huge red-tailed hawk flying above the houses on my street, so I have some hope of rabbit relief from that quarter.

  1. Between the coyotes and red foxes around here, there isn't any excess rabbit population. In fact, there are some who hunt coyotes because there are guys who like to hunt rabbits, and they think the rabbit population needs to be higher.

  2. If you want to attract a bobcat just put a cardboatd box in your backyard.
That should work, if it doesn't, put some objects on a table for it to knock off.

  3. Got bobcats here. And cougars. Also bears and coyotes. Also owls, hawks and eagles.

Still have rabbits and possums and coons and squirrels and chipmunks. I mean, they aren't hip deep or anything but they're around. Good reasons to not allow your pets to wander outside though.

  5. Count your blessings, George. Around here we're overrun with Canada geese poop machines.

  6. Those Canada geese are pretty aggressive, too. There were a bunch that took over one of Old Paco's ponds years ago. The things even stopped migrating, just hung around the pond year round.
