I've come to the conclusion that needing a hate object is hard-wired into the human psyche. For some reason, Jews (hence, Israel) are usually the object of choice in political circles.
I think you're absolutely right about that. That urge to "blame somebody" stems, at least in part, from the inability of people to admit their own inadequacies.
