"There are countless horrible things happening all over the world and horrible people prospering, but we must never allow them to disturb our equanimity or deflect us from our sacred duty to sabotage and annoy them whenever possible." -Auberon Waugh
Somewhere in my digs, I have a photo of my father with a Hulu girl, taken 1939 or so, when he was stationed in Hawaii.
ReplyDeleteMy family lived in Hawaii in the early Sixties. Like most plebs we flew out to the islands and back to the mainland, but Matson was still running passenger liners then. Several times we went to the pier under the Aloha Tower to welcome or see off family friends who were arriving or departing aboard Lurline or Matsonia.
ReplyDeleteA schoolfriend went to the USA in the 1980s to study (long story, another time) and has had a career there. So when we caught up a few years back via email, he sent me pics of his timeshare in Hawaii. (He was the bassist in our HS band, and says he's a fan of 'slack string guitar' now. Oh and he lives somewhere in the Midwest where his work is).
ReplyDeleteWe never actually got along (rock bands you know) so I chuckle when I think of his timeshare. I stopped replying to his emails after his same old personality emerged, and I prefer to just keep it that way.
Royal Mail forgot or maybe couldn't figure out how to mention Panama, but no matter where the departure is the cruise has to go through the canal.
ReplyDeleteMaybe they sailed around Tierra del Fuego so the passengers could really get their money's worth.
ReplyDeletePS, if you're wondering how a guy who grew up in public welfare housing here can afford a timeshare in Hawaii (are they expensive?).
ReplyDeleteWell, he was in our band because he built his own amplifiers when he was 16, plus he had an amazing memory for music. So it turned out he was an engineering wiz. Got a job with Rockwell.
Still, timeshare makes no sense to me.
