Interesting background on the painting, Flaming June. A chairman of the federal agency where I worked had a full-size reproduction hanging on the wall of his office. I didn't know anything about it (Dogs Playing Poker is more in my line), but I was always intrigued by it.

An interesting story. Never heard of this painting (like you, I lean towards dogs and poker scenes) until now, but it is intriguing.
ReplyDeleteIt may be an icon of art, but I can't recall ever seeing "Flaming June" before.
ReplyDeleteI'll tell you this: the print in the chairman's office was huge, and all that orange really dominated the room (the great thing was, the picture gave me something to look at and contemplate while the brass sat around the table during meetings gassing on about this and that). It has a kind of Pre-Raphaelite vibe, and I was interested to see that, while Frederick Leighton was not a member of "the brotherhood", he did associate with the Pre-Raphaelites for a period during his career.
