As soon as you say "The science is settled!" you are abandoning science. As soon as you say "There is no room for debate!" you are abandoning science. And as soon as you say "I believe in The Science!" you are abandoning science.
ReplyDeleteScience is not about consensus, it is not about suppressing discussion, and it definitely is not about "belief." If you have confirmed the data and they refute your hypothesis, then the hypothesis is incorrect. If you have to adjust the data to support your hypothesis then you are a fraud.

r-man, it's a gnostic cult. That's an idea I had a couple decades ago to explain progressivism, but kept it to myself because it seemed flip and superficial, if not outright silly.
ReplyDeleteSince then I have read other, more widely recognized thinkers than myself, writing precisely that. They even use the same terminology and reasoning that I did back then.
Sometimes I think I'm not as dumb as I think I am.

As with cults, the point is to convince enough easily-led people that what the cult leaders say is the absolute truth in order to squeeze money out of those same easily-led people.

After watching the fawning and the presentation, I suggested to my friend that all we needed was to wrap ourselves in bedsheets, smile warmly, speak a few words, and all our needs would be met. Today, the sheets have to be made from sustainable cotton, but other than that ....
