...and, happily, now, thanks to the Academy, I know I'll never have occasion to watch the awards show again: "The New Oscars Qualifying Rules for 'Best Picture' Have to Be Seen to Be Believed". Here's a sample from Woke Hollywood's New Order:
A1. Lead or significant supporting actors
At least one of the lead actors or significant supporting actors is from an underrepresented racial or ethnic group.
• Asian
• Hispanic/Latinx
• Black/African American
• Indigenous/Native American/Alaskan Native
• Middle Eastern/North African
• Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander • Other underrepresented race or ethnicity
I'm glad it's still possible to watch old movies, but I expect the long arm of censorship will reach out and begin mangling them before too long. In fact, this is already happening.
I wonder if any movie made during these years of woke madness has managed to tick all those boxes.
ReplyDeleteWouldn't it be the best Oscars night ever if the presenters just kept on saying 'No prize in this category'?
PS: About the censorship done on The French Connection. I have a 1974 Penguin paperback edition of Steppenwolf, in which the main character refers to jazz as rhymes-with-bigger music. I'm trying to find a more recent edition to see if the snip's been done.

ReplyDeleteNow, THAT I might watch.
Like you, I haven't bothered to watch the Oscars in twenty years or more. Remember when "best picture" meant a movie that engaged you from beginning to end with a good story, talented actors at their best, and a memorable music score? None of that seems to matter anymore.
ReplyDeleteThis is one reason we have them pretending Cleopatra was black, as was Ann Boleyn and Queen Charlotte. Also, the Vikings had a black warrior queen because of course they did. It was the silly Kevin Costner Robin Hood that introduced a black Muslim to the story, and as a result, every version since must have one.
ReplyDeleteAnd let's not even start with the kick-a$$ MAry Sue stronk empowered wimmingz everything has to be inflicted with. Even the live action remake of Mulan completely recast the main character, so that she did not have to struggle to improve her strength and skill, but started out more than a match for everyone else because yas kween slay. Because striving to improve yourself to reach a previously unattainable goal is just way too masculine. Ick.
