Discovering North Carolina

Heading north to visit Number One son and grandkids in Virginia, we pass billboards outside of Goldsboro that proclaim the glories of the Nahunta Pork Center, "World's Largest Pork Display". It's not actually some sort of weird pig-product museum, but a commercial outlet that retails all kinds of pork products. Dan McCoig takes us there.

Interestingly, it's just down the road from Mt Olive, which is North Carolina's pickle capital.

Mt. Olive has its own special way of celebrating the New Year: the Mt. Olive Pickle Company drops a three-foot pickle down a flagpole into a pickle tank. Yes, of course I've got video!

Btw, a couple of the neighbors hosted a pig-pickin' this past Saturday, roasting a whole pig in a giant cooker of some kind. It was absolutely delicious! One of the attendees, a retired fireman, brought some bbq sauce that was (naturally) hotter'n hell. It was vinegar-based, with, I believe, cayenne or Habanero peppers. I was so vocal in my praise, that he gave me a half jug to take home.

  1. It just so happens that Mt. Olive pickle relish is my favorite on the Nathan's hot dogs that are also my favorite.

My cousin used to hold an annual hog roast like what your neighbors had. It was a lot of work for him and a couple of his friends, but ended with pork that melts in your mouth!

  2. There was a hot dog restaurant in Detroit, the name of which I've just remembered after trying somewhat perfunctorily over the years to recall: Onassis. Great dogs, and fries with a slightly vinegary taste. Loved the place.

Cousin Ronnie roasted a pig every year for the family reunion, and Old Paco cooked one in the backyard when I was about 10 or so. Just indescribably delicious; the meat falls right off the bones.

  3. My father used to do a pig roast.
A weekend of drunken debauchery, I loved them.
Starting Friday night there kegs and bottles of booze, steaks, burgers and dogs, the pig started cooking Sat afternoon and they ate they ate it Sunday late afternoon.
I liked cruising the state roads in NC and SC, stopping at the guys selling bbq on the side of the road.
    That was good stuff.
