The Confederate rose bush (actually, a member of the hibiscus family) is highly sensitive to cold, and even a cold snap that doesn't go all the way down to freezing can damage or kill the plant off for the year (it grows back in the spring).
Fortunately, our plants bloomed nicely this year, beating out the arrival of the cold weather.
