Interesting

I saw some click bait on the internet yesterday - one of those lists of this and that that pop up all the time - and I checked it out. It pertained to the words or expressions and the first year each one was coined.

Checking out my birthyear - 1955 - I was astonished to see that "artificial intelligence" first made its appearance in that year.

This is not the web site I first saw on this subject, but it's actually better (the one I saw earlier only provided one word or expression for any given year, whereas the interactive site at the link gives you multiple words).

Here's another one from 1955: "butylated hydroxytoluene".

Yeah, I always wondered about that one.

  1. My year, 1963, was interesting.
Baathism, barcode and telemarketing but also diddly-squat, play-action pass and GT.

    Also, hairy eyeball.
I've been given many of them in my life.

  2. "Butylated hydroxytoluene", you say...can you say it? How bout five times fast? Please dont'leave us hanging, or force us to search. Butywhatever is up there with "vinyl synthetic" (the stuff that medical gloves are made of). Isn't it a bit redundant. Of course, there could be a "natural" version. You can imagine the ingredients...if you dare.

  3. 1961 - a year of harbingers. Affirmative action, Eurocrat, and - oh, great - mRNA.
