"The Brunswick County Board of Elections released the number of absentee ballots still outstanding for the 2023 November Municipal Elections. According to the release sent by the BOE office, there are seven outstanding ballots in Southport, which is significant since the unofficial count in the mayor’s race shows the top two candidates currently separated by three votes."

So you guys in NC have a Brunswick too, huh? I remember my bemusement in discovering that in addition to Beaufort NC (pronounced "Bo-fert") there was one in SC (pronounced "Byoo-fert").
ReplyDeleteI knew that Georgia and VA fight over who gets credit for Brunswick Stew, a favorite Southern dish of mine. Wonder why the Carolinas stay out of the argument? Especially since the very first time I had it was in NC, along with buttermilk pie, another favorite Southern dish.
Yeah, them folks in South Carolina ain't too educated, so they don't pronounce too good.
ReplyDeleteThe Carolinas - North Carolina, in any event - is too busy fighting other states over BBQ to worry about Brunswick stew.
And this is the second time in two days somebody has referenced buttermilk pie. Fact: I've never eaten it, and I don't recall ever hearing of it until recently, even though I saw yesterday that it's supposedly North Carolina's favorite Thanksgiving Day pie. The pies I grew up with were apple, peach, pecan, and sweet potato. Sweet potato was always my favorite. Whenever Ma Paco made sweet potato pies, she made one for me, which I generally consumed on the spot, and one or two to be shared among other family members (and also me). That buttermilk pie sounds tasty, though, so I guess I'll have to try some, if for no other reason than to stop showing my ignorance (you know, like I was some kind of South Carolinian).
Btw, the incumbent mayor of Southport is a surgeon, and was one of the first people to have a look at me when I was admitted into the local hospital with my perforated colon. I kind of like his name: Hatem.
