"There are countless horrible things happening all over the world and horrible people prospering, but we must never allow them to disturb our equanimity or deflect us from our sacred duty to sabotage and annoy them whenever possible." -Auberon Waugh
I was never a great Ali fan, I just didn't like the style of the man. Joe Frazier is still my favorite boxer.
ReplyDeleteOne of the best days of my life was the first fight in March 1971.
I was 14 and stayed home from school with a bad case of tonsilitis. Luckily, my Grandfather was living with us at the time and he was a boxing fanatic, as well as a WW1 hero.
We spent most of that Tuesday morning and afternoon watching the fight. He taught me a lot that day. I still miss him and I still miss Joe. Ali is probably the greatest but he was just not my type.
I'm with you, Mick. Ali may or may not have been "The Greatest", but I didn't like his style (although I'm not sure whether his big mouth was for real or just part of his shtick).
ReplyDeleteYeah, Joe Frazier, he's the man. Btw, I was watching some of Rocky Marciano's fights on YouTube recently; man, that guy had sledge hammers instead of arms and fists. I would have loved to have seen him fight Ali when both were in their prime.
That would have been an awesome fight. Rocky didn't spend much time on defence. He had both barrels always cocked and didn't care much for ducking and weaving. Rocky and a young Tyson
ReplyDeletewould have been a bloodbath.
