Last Post

I wanted to follow up on my ANZAC commemoration. As friend and commenter Irobot pointed out, we need to remember New Zealand's role in wartime, and I neglected to mention the Kiwis in my original post.

New Zealand deployed well over a hundred thousand military personnel overseas during WWII, and they were involved in numerous campaigns and battles, from the Battle of the River Plate, to North Africa, Crete and Italy. Here are two good introductory sites that deal with New Zealanders at war: WWI and WWII.

And "Hets awf" to these warriors!

Yes... or so they claim.

Personally I am not convinced of the actual existence of New Zealand. "Oh, it's a magical place with Hobbits and Dwarves and Elfs and dragons!" Uh huh. Right. Sure thing, Peter Jackson. If that is your real name.

Absolutley Paco.
During WW1 approximatley 100,000 Kiwis deployed to the other side of the world to support the Mother Country. This was out of a total population of 1 million.

Total casualties were 18,500 dead and 41,000 wounded. These are mind boggling figures and eclipsed even Australia's devastating figures of 60,000 dead 140,000 wounded with a population of about 5 million.

The New Zealanders are fierce warriors and it is good to have them on your side, even though they talk funny. Come on guys, there are only 5 vowels, it can't be that hard.

NZ blog The BFD deserves a mention here. This one ANZAC Day post of several.

'I was incredibly proud to carry those medals back to Gallipoli where Harry Crozier was severely wounded and evacuated firstly to a hospital ship then to various hospitals. He refused to let them amputate the leg, and back then antibiotics were unheard of. At one stage they fused both his legs together to assist in healing, and then had to separate them later.'
