"There are countless horrible things happening all over the world and horrible people prospering, but we must never allow them to disturb our equanimity or deflect us from our sacred duty to sabotage and annoy them whenever possible." -Auberon Waugh
Bruce McCall, who died last year, often parodied that style of car advertising with his fictional brand of "Bulgemobiles." If you read National Lampoon or Playboy in the Seventies you would have seen his work. He was a master of that sort of thing, and I had to search to find an obit of him not from the NYT (*spit*) or the New Yorker (*spitspit*).
ReplyDeleteHere's one from Car and Driver (which also incidentally published P.J. O'Rourke):

For those who want something better...than what? would be my question. I think the word "nondescript" would be the best way I could describe that car. About the only thing that stands out to me is the chrome grill that is at least different , if not cool. The rest of the car is...well, the definition of nondescript.
ReplyDeleteI think it looks pretty nice. It wouldn't be nondescript in my neighborhood right now, what with all the boring modern designs, and mostly-gray paint jobs. The bumper is interesting. I'd say it's at least little better than a shoebox Ford, although that's a low barrier.
ReplyDelete"a little better"
ReplyDeleteStephen: thanks for the info on McCall.
ReplyDeleteI'd like one of those.
ReplyDeleteBut then, I really like 2 tons of Detroit steel barreling down the road.
