I knew there was some kind of method to it

It was Rand McNally, the travel guide company that devised the numbering system to make travel easier, and that was adopted by the Highway Administration; John Brink, a mapmaker won a contest held by Rand McNally, which then put up their signs on phone poles;Brink was later was called on by Congress to oversee its implementation of the numbering system, because other guidebooks had started posting their own identifiers on roads, adding confusion.

Good background.

Just think how much easier the pioneers had it. No confusing highway road signs and traffic jams to slow you down, and no cheap motels and fast food places to make your trip uninspiring.

Sure, it took a little longer, but they didn't have to worry about bad drivers or traffic tickets. Those were the good old days!

I was a bit of a cartographer back in the day, and I don't want to brag, but I have successfully refolded several gas station maps in my day.
