Sad news

"Legendary comedian Bob Newhart dead at 94".

Here's one of my favorite Newhart skits (I've posted it before, but it's worth another listen).

Update Friend and commenter, tom, mentions Newhart's "Stop it!" sketch. It is a funny one, and I posted it a long time ago, but it's one that's definitely worth watching again.

  1. I remember the "Hi Bob" drinking game from back in the day; while watching The Ben Newhart Show, you drink every time someone says hi Bob and end up with a good buzz by the end.

  2. To me, he was Capt Major Major in Catch 22. A brilliant portrayal.

I did not watch TV in the 1970s and 1980s, too busy doing other things.

Bruce, you mean Major Major Major Major.

I like his driving instructor skit. Though the security guard calling to report King King climbing the building was good. And the guy trying to disarm a bomb over the phone was very funny too.

  4. He made me laugh a lot. That clip is hilarious.

I too played Hi Bob, except I recall getting very drunk, with shots lined up because folks said Hi Bob more quickly than I could down shots.

For someone who seemed like such a nice guy, it was odd that he was such great friends with Don Rickles.
I would love to have hung out drinking with those two.
    Maybe play Hi Bob.

  6. To my shame, I didn't realize Bob Newhart was even still alive. He and Jonathan Winters were my favorite comedians.

  7. Two of my favorites, also, Rebecca.

V: I saw an episode of a talk show one time (might have been Carson) where Newhart talked about a cruise that he and Rickles and their wives took. They took some movies of it. Pretty hilarious, as I recall.
