"There are countless horrible things happening all over the world and horrible people prospering, but we must never allow them to disturb our equanimity or deflect us from our sacred duty to sabotage and annoy them whenever possible." -Auberon Waugh
The romance of rail!
ReplyDeleteThree times - or should I say thrice? - I have ridden the Coast Starlight from CA to Seattle. The first time I rode coach and it was okay, the seats are better for dozing in than any coach airline seats.
ReplyDeleteBut the other two times I paid for first class, which gave me a compartment and meals, and access to the Pacific Parlor lounge cars. And that really is the best way to travel if you have the time.
We rode Amtrak's Auto Train from Sanford, Fl to Lorton, Va back in the mid 80s. We had a private compartment with two beds, and a shower/toilet closet. The food in the dining car was outstanding. If you can find good train service, it really is a good way to go.
