Classical corner

Debussy's La fille aux cheveux de lin.

Bonus video! Who knew that 1950s and 1960s sex symbol, Jayne Mansfield, was a classically trained violinist? I sure didn't. Here she is on the Ed Sullivan program performing Vivaldi's Concerto No. 6 in A Minor.

  1. I didn't know that Jane Mansfield was a violinist! Wow. The things I never learned as a kid .....

  2. I was just reading up on her. She reportedly had a very high IQ and spoke several languages. She was known as "the smartest dumb blonde in Hollywood".

  3. I suppose the next thing I'll be finding out is that Marilyn Monroe solved Fermat's Last Theorem.

    1. Or, I should say, discovered a proof of Fermat's Last Theorem.

  4. Remember Charo, the "cuchi, cuchi" girl who was on The Tonight Show a lot?
Did you know she's a very good classical guitarist who was taught by Andres Segovia?
Oh, wait, you do. I think we've talked about her surprising talent in the past.

    1. I don't know if we talked about it, but I do remember seeing her playing the guitar on a talk show once, and she was very good.

  5. I guess I'm classically trained on the violin - 50 years ago I took lessons from a lady who played in an orchestra. I had the left hand fingering down, but bowing, I never got past screeching cat noises, and had nowhere to practice, so went back to guitar. I can hear when Jayne screeches - especially when she moves into 2nd position, higher register - made me cringe. But remembering the piece without reading is a good feat. She has a good firm grip, unusual for a girl.
