Even growing up Catholic through the 50s and 60s I could not keep track of the many religious orders of priests, brothers and nuns. Then there were the lay orders, such as the Sodality of the Sacred Heart which older men in my church belonged to. This is interesting:

I joined the St Vincent de Paul Society after high school, but only attended meetings for a few months. Long story.
I think this kind of guild thing was prominent in Ancient Rome and that the Church Christianised it. Certainly Roman soldiers had inner brotherhoods and groups. So these Crusader Orders would follow with inherited military discipline.
