Bob Uecker - a so-so baseball player who parlayed his mediocre time in the majors into a brilliant career as a comic and announcer for the Milwaukee Brewers - has died.
* Here's the video that explains the title of the post:
And here's Bob in an early appearance on the Johnny Carson Show, demonstrating his deadpan delivery.
Mr H thought Uecker was the funniest man in the world, and he loved to imitate that “front row” commercial.
ReplyDeleteThere are so many good bits he did on the Tonight Show, not to mention all those funny commercials. One particular routine he did on Johnny Carson involved a particular announcer (I don't recall the announcer's name, but I think he worked for either the White Sox or the Cubs) calling a game while being pressed to include updates on a nuclear attack. Absolutely hilarious.
DeleteHe was great in Major League too.
ReplyDeleteI occasionally use his, "Just a bit outside" line.
When I heard that he would be a guest on the next Tonight Show, I'd never miss it. He was one of a small number of people I wouldn't miss. And I don't remember ever being disappointed.
