Greased lightning

There have been quite a few lawmen in our country's history who developed reputations as first-rate gun handlers and "shootists". I posted about Delph "Jelly Bean" Bryce quite a while back, (an Oklahoma policeman and later an FBI agent), and here's a video on another peace officer, Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Dan Combs (What is it about Oklahoma? Looks like the home of fast reflexes).

My take-away: if I ever get pulled over by the Highway Patrol, I'm going let the Trooper take my license out of my pocket.

  1. That last demonstration is a really good one. The old cowboy wheel guns (single action, of course) have an incredibly sensitive trigger when the hammer is cocked back. I never have measured the trigger on a single action, but I'd estimate around 1 pound.

    1. You're sure right about that. All of my Old West guns (mostly Italian replicas) have very close to hair-trigger actions when they're cocked. I ought to know: I've had enough of them go off just a shade before I was ready to shoot. I've gotten to the point where I watch my finger going through the trigger guard, consciously holding the back of my index finger against the inside of the front of the trigger guard before preparing to shoot.

  2. That's impressive, but he's no Barney Fife.
