Manchester was a powerhouse of the industrial revolution which needed an endless supply of factory workers. When England was the capital of a new Roman Empire as they believed, it all made sense*. But when the music stops, someone is left holding the baby.
ReplyDelete*A forgotten example of British Empire power, was how soldiers from British India were utilised in Asia and Africa. Chinese remember that when the British massacred uprisings in coastal China, they used Sikhs to do the actual killing. See Indian soldiers seizing Peking during the Boxer Rebellion:
