If you're ever baffled by the willingness of Soviet citizens and Germans under the Nazis to inform on their own family members and friends, just look around you in contemporary America, at the monumental intolerance of the anti-Trump fanatics: "Scott Adams Says Obama's Russia Hoax and the 'Fine People' Lie Ruined His Life and Split America".
Fortunately, my family all proved to be mostly pro-Trump (or, in one or two cases, so completely apolitical they didn't care one way or the other). I have a close friend whose wife hates Trump, so they can't touch the subject at all. Before I retired, there were people at my agency who openly derided Trump (interestingly, they were mostly lawyers; the senior executives were sufficiently concerned about self-preservation that they generally kept their objections to themselves). I've seen the froth-mouthed TDS sufferers among acquaintances up close, and, to put it mildly, they didn't strike me as people who would hide me in their attic.
those are the same people who wanted to put the unvaxed in camps and deny them healthcare...
ReplyDeleteTheir intolerance is very sweeping.
DeleteI have a good idea who I can talk to and who to avoid in my neighborhood and friend groups. Even now, i won't put any stickers on my car, i don't feel like I can advertise my views, so I self censor.
ReplyDeleteWhen I quit the job at the start of 2022 because I wouldn't roll up my sleeve I was ready for some hostility. All I got was a few people - the company's top man among them - who started throwing me nervous looks when we passed in the hall. Perhaps I threw them off balance because I didn't hide why I was leaving. But I didn't blast the news out, either. No loud and heavy emails.
ReplyDeleteThe departure itself was farcical. I emailed my resignation to the relevant people (first day back and the entire HR team was working from home) and they said 'Thank you, we appreciate your explanation for leaving. We are happy for you to work out your four weeks.'
When the office manager was in a few days later I said it seemed strange that they'd keep me around. I assumed they considered me a risk to the rest of the staff. OM didn't bat an eyelid. She came straight back with 'Oh, but there's work for you to do!'
