A distinction with fewer differences than a person unfamiliar with history would think

  1. I don’t see a distinction.

  2. Until the late 19-teens, there was no difference. Benito Mussolini was kicked out of the Italian Socialist Party because he advocated Italy joining WWI... and thus decided to create his own unique innovation by making a socialist party that was nationalist rather than international.

Even what became the Soviets started as "socialists" before adopting the term "Communist." mainly to distinguish themselves from all the other hard left parties.

Even Hitler dabbled in Communism after WWI, being named a soldier's delegate to a short lived Bavarian "Red" government.

  3. I'm sure the distinction is that Mamdani will do it right this time.
