The article says that the sheriff has no police duties ("... with a mission that includes court security, the service of legal process, prisoner transport, fugitive apprehension, and sheriff’s sales ...")
That sheriff's department is barely above rent-a-cop status!
I'm guessing when the city and county consolidated, they decided having two local law enforcement agencies wasn't a good idea, which is not unreasonable.
But that "sheriff" is so full of herself, she publicly outed herself as a nitwit.
Very similar to the independent cities of Virginia, which are not part of a county, but do typically have a sheriff's department that is in charge of the same stuff: courthouse security, prisoner transport, process serving, etc.
DeleteWoodstock, NY had Woodstock police, Town of Olive, Ulster County sheriffs and occasionally NYS police and little or no crime.
