I remember working on a group project at the University of Miami back in the late 70s, and one of the guys was from Kuwait. He seemed like a nice fellow, intelligent, soft-spoken, non-confrontational. And then one day, out of the blue, he starts telling a story about how, when he was a boy, he and his friends would kidnap dogs from the homes of foreign diplomatic personnel, and torture them and hang them. It was like he was telling some harmless tale about youthful pranks, as if what he and his friends had done was nothing worse that the age-old American tradition of tp-ing a neighbor's yard. A shocking introduction to the savagery that lay just beneath the surface civility.
