And now, a word from our sponsor

Spectacular, but, man, I really don't like heights. That girl was braver than I would have been. They would have had to sedate me and buckle me in.

  1. Ditto on the heights, Paco.

And getting that car -- and gal! -- up there was a major effort. And expensive. Whoa!

  2. There's a picture of me, casually leaning on a tree, about 15 or so feet from the rim of the Grand Canyon.
Not obvious in the picture, the white-knuckled grip on the tree. It took me a couple minutes to unclench my hand.
If they gave me that car, I'd sit in it for that commercial.
As an added bonus, they could also use the footage for Depends!

Big deal.. Today with AI and CGI they could have the car jump the cliff and soar across tot he other side, caroming off eagles and 747s along the way before gently touching down on the backs of four burros.

Related, anybody remember the MGB commercial where they shoved the car from a plane, a parachute deployed, and when it landed it just drove away?

  4. A little time with ddgo: It was filmed atop Castle Rock, which is located near Moab, Utah. The stunt was executed by the Alexander Film Company, which airlifted the car in three pieces using a helicopter.
A model, Shirley Rumsey, was featured in the ad, sitting on the car while secured with a safety harness. This commercial is often regarded as one of the most ambitious car advertisements ever produced, even by today's standards.

    1. I wonder how long it took Shirley to put the three pieces back together? :-)

    2. So, they had to find a pretty girl who was not afraid of heights, and was a skilled welder. This commercial becomes more impressive by the minute.

  5. I guess you have to put it in first gear when you drive down.
