On Monday, a horse named Austrian Painter won a race in Indiana.
By Wednesday, the horse had been renamed after the Internet figured out it was a reference to Adolf Hitler.
The owner claimed it was just a misunderstanding. Is he telling the truth? Here's what we call a clue:
Austrian painter is a popular euphemism in some corners of the internet to discuss Hitler while evading censors. Herbertson's initial explanation did not hold up well when some online sleuths discovered in the Jockey Club's database that he had submitted backup names to the Jockey Club including My Struggle and Braunau Star.
Back in the Nineties I was overseas during the McVeigh trial, so my information came in small doses.
ReplyDeleteOne thing kept popping up: The Turner Diaries, supposedly a very significant book for McVeigh. I wanted to get a look into his way of thinking so I found a copy, expecting a generic "Look out for the blue helmets and the UN helicopters!" screed.
The more I read the more obvious it became that it was a Nazi tract. But nothing blatant, no goose stepping or "Sieg Heils!" or outstretched arm salutes. Just subtle clues here and there. The least subtle one came at the very end, the final line mentions that the great threat to humanity was finally ended in 1999, a hundred and ten years after the birth of the Great One.
Yeah, the name was deliberate. The owner knew what he was doing.

The biggest clue was the horse's mustache.
