"There are countless horrible things happening all over the world and horrible people prospering, but we must never allow them to disturb our equanimity or deflect us from our sacred duty to sabotage and annoy them whenever possible." -Auberon Waugh
I'd have to say that apart from the Hamas styling comment which is ludicrous, most of the others are about not offending the locals and this seems reasonable.
ReplyDeleteCAC: Probably true, except for those who may have had some experience in traveling to that part of the world before, and may see the suggestions as being redundant, and possibly condescending; however, frankly, if I were Obama and was taking a big PR chance on a tour like this, I'd probably be willing to risk the ire of the female reporters, too.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to think that this advice would be redundant and maybe this is a reasonable call. But having spent a bit of time in this area once upon a time, it is quite astonishing what some western women will wear (admittedly tourists rather than journos). Perhaps, as with so much with the good Senator, the issue is not so much what he says but the excessively condescending way in which it seems to be expressed.
ReplyDeleteIncidentally, as an avid watcher of things Australian, you might be interested to know that the ABC ran a profile of McCain last night. Unusually for the ABC, it was actually quite balanced and kept the suggestions that he's the spawn of satan and part time killer of puppies to a minimum.
CAC: I commend ABC for what sounds like a (quasi) unbiased report.
ReplyDeleteNow, with respect to suitable attire, I wish someone could do something with the tourists in Washington, D.C.
