"The Naughty Librarian Vibe"

Mark Steyn (not surprisingly) has one of the best initial takes on Sarah Palin.

Update: Uh-oh! The anticipated Palin bounce will no doubt be canceled out by the endorsement of Obama by Saudi Arabia.

God bless Mark Steyn, I applaud nearly everything he says, but I could have done without the "naughty librarian" comment, even though I understand where it comes from.

Forgive me for sounding like your unfriendly neighborhood feminazi. But this is serious business, and Sarah Palin should be treated like any other politician, on her own merits, which are considerable, and outshine Obeyme's by an order of magnitude.

Rebecca: If Steyn had written, "beauty queen vibe", then your point would have been unassailable; however, the metaphorical expression he did use strikes me as being one of his typically clever masterstrokes: he has anticipated the inevitable bimbo charges and deflected them by pointedly conjoining Sarah's physical attractiveness with intelligence - and has added just a dash of sex appeal. I think this is a polemical, as well as an aesthetic plus, particularly in an election that has been dominated in the last couple of weeks by two and a half white guys.

I love it. Two and a half white guys. Yet it's the missing half that is garnering the political appeal. He's as shallow as a blister.

Mehaul, rebecca & paco...I have a confession. I not only think Obeyme (if I may borrow that, thanks!) is a drooling fool of a Socialist, I also do not see one single thing about him I consider 'handsome.'

A classless, spineless puppet. But NOT handsome.

Barry is a putz. Governor Palin is a Babe. In the most complimentary meaning of the word. And that hubby of hers ain't no slouch, either!

I believe Craig Ferguson first made the "naughty librarian" remark about Mrs Palin in 2007. (Courtesy of
R.S. McCain)

MCB: I believe you're right. In fact, Steyn referenced him in his short article.

Ah so he did, Mr Paco. However Mr Steyn's Readers seemed to think he invented the comment.

Paco said...

No, he didn't invent it; but he made excellent use of the metaphor by hooking it up as the caboose to his train of thought.

Paco, I concede your point.

Perhaps I overreacted (in my defense, after years of taking guff from men Who Don't Understand). I believe you are not one of those, nor are the majority of our fellow commenters (Blairites, Crittendenites, Instapundit emailers, Tizonites et al). It has been a pleasure to be among your company.

Rebecca: Your point is perfectly valid; we all do have to be careful to emphasize the real reasons we are supportive of Sarah's candidacy. And, like you, while I hope this works out, it is definitely something of a gamble

A gamble, yes, but so far I've loved seeing the lefty trash trying to rationalize why her "inexperience" is worse than the Big O's "inexperience". And, you have to admit, she's ten times the woman Hillary Rotten Clinton could ever be.

kc...I knew her hubby would be a big hit with the women folk! He looks like the outdoor type of hunk women dig, straight out of Men In Trees.

rinardman, I prefer to think I like Men In Trees who have brains. Todd Palin is the kind of man I was raised by and raised with...then again, I was raised in a northern middle-of-nowhere small town, too.

This candidate has more about her than I can relate to than any other candidate anywhere in my entire life.

So why would that make me a bit nervous?
