Paul Newman - RIP

Paul Newman has died at age 83.

I never cared for his politics, but he was a genuine philanthropist, and, most importantly, of course, one of the finest actors of his generation. What other actor - living today - can claim such a long list of memorable films? Hud, Cool Hand Luke, The Hustler, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting - a great loss to cinema; irreplaceable.

Absolutely a great loss to acting, paco. I utterly ignored his politics, but admired everything else he did.

Vale, Mr. Newman. Alas, you have no successors in the current generation of the entertainment industry.

One of Hollywood's last men.

Vale.

A decent actor and a truly Good Man - even though I didn't agree with his politics, he lived his creed without namecalling or rancor.

I always liked Paul Newman in whatever role he played. And despite his politics, he believed in the country. I like to think he would not approve of Mr. Obama as a standard-bearer for the Democratic party.

Well said all.

I'll add that his 50 yrs married to Joanne Woodward inspire me.

*sigh* I wish Hollywood still had leading men with his class instead of a bunch of whining drug addicts.

I have Cool Hand Luke on dvd - must run it again. A classic! The honey mustard salad dressing is too.
50 years married - I'll try to match that. The current crop of actors might have trouble matching him on any score.

blogstrop: the current crop of actors aren't fit to chalk his pool cue.

A good man all round. I especially appreciate him not shoving his politics down our throats as a badge of moral superiority.

Great salad dressiong and spaghetti sauce, too.

And of course a fine body of work he left to inspire and entertain us.

Strangely, I've always got {Paul Newman and Marlin Brandeau (sp?)I've adopted the french-canadian spelling there, sorry)

Which one appeared in Streetcar Named desire and On the Waterfornt?
