"There are countless horrible things happening all over the world and horrible people prospering, but we must never allow them to disturb our equanimity or deflect us from our sacred duty to sabotage and annoy them whenever possible." -Auberon Waugh
Yeah, and Kangaroos are not always as cut and cuddly as they look either!
ReplyDeleteHell, I think some of the sheep in Australia are venomous.
ReplyDeleteAs one who has had several relationships with Australian "birds", I can agree they are are very dangerous. Occasionally they will take half your house, income and future earnings. However, the odd one is very loving and worth the chance.
ReplyDeleteThe caring commenters under that article can rest assured. Humans are the threatened species at Mission Beach, not Cassowaries.
ReplyDeleteA young friend of our daughter lived on the edge of town there for years.
The locals quickly learn that a male Cassowary with chicks has right of way over humans wherever he goes, and that includes walking through your house if he is so inclined.
I spend time most days chasing a bunch of these out of my backyard:

"They can be destructive to cereal and fruit crops, as well as timber structures such as house planking, garden furniture and trees."
very noisy too, with loud screeching
Ha! - "These birds are very long lived, and can live upwards from 70 years in captivity, although they only live to about 20-40 years in the wild"
ReplyDeleteSo - Save a Cockatoo, put it in a cage! (Please!)
Yeah, Bruce.
ReplyDeleteThis is what a few of the little charmers did to my mandarines in one afternoon.
They are only interested in eating the seeds and so attack the fruit long before it's ripe enough for humans to eat.
Sheesh! Sounds like Alfred Hitchcock must have been inspired by Australia when he did The Birds (and, of course, Daphne de Maurier).
ReplyDeleteI love Australia. But I am very careful wehen there as almost everything is poisonous or deadly somehow; especially to scuba divers.
ReplyDeleteDo not lay on the grass lawns.
Yeah, the Cockatoos and amazingly colored parrots are amazingly amazing ... to those who don't live where they do in Australia.
ReplyDeleteBut they are real pests to those who do. And they are protected, so you can't eat them; unlike pigeons, because they are like pigeons in that respect.
I've seen plenty of cassowaries around the scrub where I live and they are a fine looking bird if perhaps a little stringy and somewhat tasteless.
ReplyDeleteBut don't tell the greenies.
I thought this was to be a post about Kae ...
ReplyDeleteCheers
JMH
Queensland sounds... um... lovely to live in. But the cassowary sounds like a fascinating bird, maybe the most dinosaur-like of all the birds.
ReplyDeleteBeing spring, we're also under attack from these just now. A friend was attacked in an open park last week and had an eye damaged. Thankfully, not badly.
ReplyDelete"The only country in the world where the snakes are scared of the spiders and the goddamn birds will kick your ass."
ReplyDeleteThey come for you in your sleep...mostly:
