South of the Border

Two deadly currents of hatred are coming together in South America, and could present unforeseen challenges to the new administration: (1) an upswing in anti Semitism and (2) closer ties betweenMuslim terrorist states and radical socialists. Might be a good time for Obama and his party to rethink their strategy of alienating one of our strongest allies in the region.

Later, Ahmi, not here in public!

Both of these guys give me the creeps, and I'm gay. Ick. Maybe that should read because instead of and.

Creepy AND dangerous. Bolivia, incidentally, may well be inching toward civil war; there are several provinces where Morales is detested, and the people support liberal democracy.

The situation of Venezuelan Jews is eerily similar to that of German Jews prior to 1939. They believed the anti-Semitism would pass, leaving most of them largely able to recoup. Even when everything collapsed, many could not believe what was about to occur, and their incredulity doomed them.

If the world economy tanks, as it did in the 30s, and Chavez faces the prospect of going under or creating a false enemy in order to preserve his own power, the Jews of Venezuela (and of South America in general) will rue the day they didn't flee when they had the chance.

There is nothing new under the sun.
