When the Going was Good
Today is the birthday of Ronald Reagan, of blessed memory. He was a great president; Obama isn't fit to iron his pocket handkerchiefs. Above all, Reagan serves to remind us that real charisma, at bottom, is dependent on character, dignity and substantive ideas. Maybe we'll all remember that by the time 2012 rolls around.
Ace of Spades has a video of the 1981 inaugural address.
Update: A great - and typical - Reagan story.

reagan was the man who changed my political beliefs. i was living in LA when he was elected and most of my friends had no kind words for the man who made "bedtime for bonzo" and divorced jane wyman. one would think that was the only film he made. as you said, he was a man of dignity, character and may i add integrity
ReplyDeleteThe story of Reagan and Mr. Bullock is very moving. The first tiem I was qualified to vote, I voted for Reagan and I've always been glad that I did.
ReplyDeleteNever heard of him.
ReplyDeleteAbout the only thing we will be remebering in 2012 is how bereft of leaders we have become . We won't have anyone that fits on the same continent with him, much less the same zip code.
Dr. Alice, Reagan ran in the second presidential election in which I could vote. I was very pleased to vote for Reagan, and get Carter out.
ReplyDeleteThe first vote I ever cast when I came of age was for Ronald Reagan in the 1980 GOP Primary. I skipped a city election so that he could be the first.
