Sanity breaks out on university campus!

The University of Virginia has eliminated its "speech codes". Mike Adams at Townhall has the details:
Concerned parents looking to send their kids to a college free from repressive speech codes can now add another option to their list. Last semester, the University of Virginia (UVA) eliminated the last of a series of policies that unconstitutionally restricted the free speech of students and faculty members. Two-thirds of the nation's colleges maintain policies that clearly and substantially restrict freedom of speech. But now, UVA is an exception to the rule having fully reformed four speech codes over the course of the last year.
A small victory, perhaps, but an important one. Colleges and universities have become the foundry for the creation of liberal robots, and their totalitarian impulses, masked as reverence for that new bitch-goddess called "Civility", remain one of the major long-term threats to our traditional freedoms.

This is a BIG deal. Remember the "freedom fighters" who took over admin buildings and protested at universities all over the country in the 60's, demanding their "rights?" They run most unviersities now, and this sounds like a complete reversal of their doctrine. Hallelujah!

There is always time for civility... and frequently a time to set it aside. You have the right to expect me not to be rude by accident, not to never be rude.

"All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men not to want to give offense..." is a terrible epitaph for a culture.

Well said, Richard, well said.

Manners is a fine and good thing. Trouble arises when people mistake manners for something else - 'lying', for instance, or 'maintaining appropriate political sentiments'.

A good international example is Ricky Gervais’ recent speech at the Golden Globes which so offended certain Hollywood bigwigs. Bad manners? Hardly – he was telling the truth. But those Hollywood chaps, so used to being cosseted and pampered and flattered, couldn’t tell the difference.

What, Ricky Gervais, at least he's not a chubby little loser:

Actually I disagree about Gervais, TimT. Neither bad manners nor truth-telling per se, but brilliantly milking his one chance, he made a very big splash, he'll be remembered for decades. He'll be able to retire on the notoriety. He's obviously very smart. Good luck to him.

Dunno Bruce, I think everyone of the jokes I heard were based around some unpalatable truth to Hollywood types - something about their stars that they'd rather not be public knowledge.
