According to a recent report issued by Allstate Insurance Co., Washington, D.C. can lay claim to having the worst — or at least the most accident-prone — drivers among the 200 largest cities in the U.S.My reason for assuming it was Boston was, admittedly, based on a non-scientific survey consisting of observing the number of cars that had dents, as I drove through the city (many years ago). As I recall, the percentage was 100%.

I'm actually surprised
I always figured it was Boston.

I'm not surprised. We spent a year in Alexandria, and came to the conclusion that Washington is full of foreign diplomatic workers with immunity, driving cars paid for by embassies. It was worth your life to get on the Beltway.
ReplyDeleteIn Boston, you don't report accidents unless there's a death involved.
ReplyDeleteI lived in the DC area for a bunch of years and every single day there's a major accident or three tying up the Beltway.
DC's problem is that you have drivers from all over the world, many from third world countries where traffic laws are....elastic.
You have drivers from all over the country, each with a different style of driving.
You have drivers from the DC area who drive like A-holes. Nobody, and I mean nobody, uses their signal lights to change lanes or turn. I include cop cars in that.
Add in all the tourists who have no idea where the heck they're going and it makes for a white-line nightmare.
I've lived in Boston and I'll take their drivers over everybody else (except NH drivers). Boston might be driving at its most feral, but they get places.
It shows that crazy drivers are safer than stupid ones. ;)
ReplyDeleteThe other big problem with DC is that we have miles and miles of lane miles of highways that were planned and never built. Unfortunately, people come to DC with their political activism and then practice it at a local level. In addition, with so many differnt kinds of competing jurisdictions all you need is one disagreement to keep any real work from getting done.
Definitive test begins right about...now.
ReplyDeleteCan you buy a t-shirt that sez,"I Survived D.C.Traffic!"
Boston still champion.
