"There are countless horrible things happening all over the world and horrible people prospering, but we must never allow them to disturb our equanimity or deflect us from our sacred duty to sabotage and annoy them whenever possible." -Auberon Waugh
Let's not get too caught up in the hagiography. Jobs was a promoter of liberal causes, remember.
ReplyDeleteThe point is that, regardless of the liberal sentiments he professed, his career exemplified the glories of capitalism, particularly the notion of ideas as an important component of capital. Naturally, we prefer capitalists who do not undermine, by word or deed, the underlying (and perhaps not fully perceived) values that helped them succeed.
ReplyDeletePerhaps I should have used the Koch brothers as an example (that would have had the additional benefit of sending chills down the spine of any stray liberal who dropped by).
Quite the contrary, Jobs is a perfect example. It strikes to the heart of the Elizabeth Warren thesis which is the prevailing sentiment among the left at this time. He would be the paradigm case argument against her happy little band of marauding economic lepers.
