Thomas Friedman, call your office

A fishing village in China has rebelled against the Communist Party.
For the first time on record, the Chinese Communist party has lost all control, with the population of 20,000 in this southern fishing village now in open revolt.

The last of Wukan’s dozen party officials fled on Monday after thousands of people blocked armed police from retaking the village, standing firm against tear gas and water cannons.

Since then, the police have retreated to a roadblock, some three miles away, in order to prevent food and water from entering, and villagers from leaving. Wukan’s fishing fleet, its main source of income, has also been stopped from leaving harbour.
Contra Friedman, I guess China’s political system isn’t perfect, after all.

Unfortunately, the people of Wakun will probably disappear, and the outside world will never know. Too bad we can't send Friedman there to report on it.

Deborah Leigh said... Little by little the Communists take away this village's land leaving only the fishing. What do they expect them to do? It isn't sustainable.

The 99% protest banks and student loans and asundry other Lefty hot points. They should look at this village for a real reason to protest.

RebeccaH is right. This village will disappear and no one will blink. Their neighbors suffer too
for giving them aid.

I'm afraid you're both right. Interesting how people like Friedman never seem to have any interest in following up on these little "glitches" in the system.

Let us hope this is a sign of a coming Chinese Spring.

China has advanced from Communism to Fascism. We can only hope the Chinese find some halfway decent system before they fall into National Socialism.
