Goree Carter and his Hepcats rock the house with a late 40’s Texas boogie called “Rock Awhile” (considered by many to be the first genuine rock and roll recording).

ReplyDeleteThis song was Carter's only real hit, I believe, so it's not surprising that you haven't heard of him. I only stumbled across him by accident.
ReplyDeleteI've had more than one person tell me that "Rocket 88" was the first rock recording, and that was in 1951.
ReplyDeleteProfessor Longhair is also frequently credited with introducing the basics of rock in some of his early stuff. I think that mostly came after 1950 though.
Yeah, I think Rocket 88 is considered by most to have been the first true rock & roll tune, but some people also credit Jimmy Preston's Rock the Joint.
ReplyDeleteSome also credit Fats Domino's recording of 'The Fatman', but, like this song, it's merely Boogie Woogie.
ReplyDelete'Rocket 88' and 'Rock This Joint' combine R&B and Boogie Woogie and Country.
One could make the case that Bill Haley's 'Crazy Man Crazy' if really the first.
Who knows...
