Most of those cities had high proportions of manufacturing and unions tied to the Big Three auto industry (Atlanta and the California cities being the exception). Also, they are all run by Democratic political machines. It's no mystery at all why they're dying. RIP, I say, but keep your low-information detritus out of our backyards.
The miserable in the Blue cities keep voting Democrat because the Democrats promise to end their suffering. Problem is, if the Democrats ever managed to come through on that promise, they'd be out of a job. Hence, Blue city misery must never end.
