If you want to hear a speech real bad…

…you can count on Obama for a real bad speech. Kevin Williamson denounces the whole idea of SOTU speeches, with their increasingly monarchical trappings, in this fiery piece at NRO. A sample:
The annual State of the Union pageant is a hideous, dispiriting, ugly, monotonous, un-American, un-republican, anti-democratic, dreary, backward, monarchical, retch-inducing, depressing, shameful, crypto-imperial display of official self-aggrandizement and piteous toadying, a black Mass during which every unholy order of teacup totalitarian and cringing courtier gathers under the towering dome of a faux-Roman temple to listen to a speech with no content given by a man with no content, to rise and to be seated as is called for by the order of worship — it is a wonder they have not started genuflecting — with one wretched representative of their number squirreled away in some well-upholstered Washington hidey-hole in order to preserve the illusion that those gathered constitute a special class of humanity without whom we could not live.

It’s the most nauseating display in American public life — and I write that as someone who has just returned from a pornographers’ convention.
Update: Ron Swanson provides some balance to the utopian left-wing crap you'll be hearing from Obama tonight (or would be, if you were listening).

Update II: Haw! Supreme Court justices Alito, Scalia and Thomas gave the speech a miss.

Update III: The only good thing about Obama's SOTU speech? Stephen Green's drunkblogging.

Hi Lordship plans to announce an 'increase in the basic wage' they say.

What about free bread and circuses?

bruce said...

His, or Hi if that works for you.

His Highness?

Well, Michelle would probably frown on the bread - probably more like free carrot juice.

Circuses? Yeah, I can see it. It'll be the Evil Clown Full Employment Act.

Deborah....Rep. Jim Bridenstine's guest was the father of Tyrone Woods, the SEAL who was murdered at Benghazi. But at this point, what does it matter, right? This isn't the year of heroes like Tyrone. It's surprising that George Takei wasn't there to oversee a mass marriage ceremony.

What's in your wallet...or 401k? Did Obama mention requiring 401k holders to liquidate and use the funds to purchase government bonds? It was done in Europe.

Paco, would M approve if it were glutten free?

That guy I listen to on the radio everyday said they should call it the State of the Coup address.

Yeah, that.

R-man: The SOTU sucks, but the coup is coming along fine.

Here's a summary of the SOTU from a soused citizen sounding sensible. It tells me all I need to know, that's for sure.

I knew better than to try and watch all that BS, because I probably would have pitched my TV through the patio door. I have never loathed a politician as much as I loathe Barack Obama.

Deborah....John Stossel gave a SOTU the way he thought it should have been. Most of it was agreeable. It was better than anything O would come up with.

The high (or is it low) spot was Obama proudly declaring that he would use Executive Orders to do what he wants if Congress did not go along. Previously, he had just done it; now he announced it. Pure hubris.

From the Botox addled brain of San Fran Nan (Nancy Pelosi). She stated Obama's use of Executive Order is akin to Lincoln freeing the slaves.FYI Nan. Only in your mind.
